Good News!! Four More Ebola Patients Discharged – Health Minister

Four more patients have been certified clean and
discharged from the Ebola Isolation center in Lagos
after undergoing treatment for the deadly disease.
The four patients include two male doctors, the
nurse who had earlier escaped from the isolation
center and ran to Enugu and a female patient who
was on admission at the time Patrick Sawyer was
hospitalized at the First Consultant Hospital.
The news of their discharge was disclosed in a
statement released today by the Minister of Health,
Prof Onyebuchi Chukwu and signed by his his
Special Assistant on Media and Communication , Mr.
Dan Nwomeh. Read parts of the statement after the
cut.
“The Minister of Health Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu
has announced that four additional confirmed
cases of Ebola Virus Disease who have been
managed successfully and are now disease free
have been discharged home today. They include
two male medical doctors and one female nurse.
The three participated in the treatment of the
index case while the fourth person was a female
patient at the time the index case was on
admission. This brings to five the total number of
patients diagnosed with Ebola Virus Disease who
have now been discharged from hospital.”
On Saturday August 16th, the Health Minister
announced that the first Nigerian to be diagnosed of
EVD, a female doctor, had been discharged after
she was treated and certified cured.
The Minister also stated that the total number of
cases of the Ebola Virus Disease in Nigeria
remained at 12 while the number of deaths from
the disease was four and that the number of people
under surveillance in Lagos is 189 while in Enugu is
6.

Ebola Not Airborne, WHO Reiterates

The World Health Organization (WHO) yesterday reiterated
its position that the risk of transmission of Ebola virus
disease during air travel remains low.
“Unlike infections such as influenza or tuberculosis, Ebola
is not airborne,” says Dr Isabelle Nuttall, Director of WHO
Global Capacity Alert and Response in a release on
Thursday.
“It can only be transmitted by direct contact with the
body fluids of a person who is sick with the disease.”
According to the UN health agency, on the small chance
that someone on the plane is sick with Ebola, the
likelihood of other passengers and crew having contact
with their body fluids is even smaller. Usually when
someone is sick with Ebola, they are so unwell that they
cannot travel. WHO therefore advised against travel bans
to and from affected countries.
“Because the risk of Ebola transmission on airplanes is so
low, WHO does not consider air transport hubs at high
risk for further spread of Ebola,” says Dr Nuttall.
In early August, after the meeting of the Ebola Emergency
Committee under the International Health Regulations,
WHO provided advice to countries to help contain the
current Ebola outbreak and prevent it from spreading
further. The body therefore recommended that no ban
should be placed on international travel or trade; that
countries be prepared to detect, investigate, and manage
Ebola cases, including access to a qualified diagnostic
laboratory for Ebola virus and, where appropriate, the
capacity to identify and care for travellers originating from
known Ebola-infected areas who arrive at international
airports or major land crossing points with unexplained
fever and other symptoms.
WHO therefore said countries across the globe should
provide their citizens traveling to Ebola-affected countries
with accurate and relevant information on the Ebola
outbreak and measures to reduce the risk of exposure.

CBN Re-Introduces Bank Charges For ATM Withdrawals

The Central Bank of Nigeria as re-introduced bank
charges on Automated Teller Machines. Bank customers
as from 1st of September, 2014 will now pay N65 when
they make use of other banks ATMs.
Though in the directive, CBN stated that the first 3
withdrawals in a month on other bank ATMs will be free
but subsequent one will be charged at N65 per
transaction.
It will be recalled that banks were charging N100 per
transaction on ATM machines before the Central Bank
cancelled it in December 2012 and
made it free. Now it’s back with a reduction of N35.

Boko Haram abducts 100 young men in Borno

The deadly Boko Haram sect may have forcefully
conscripted 100 persons in Doron Baga, a village in
Borno State.
It was gathered that about 100 persons were abducted
during a Sunday attack on the village where over 10
persons were killed.
A source, who spoke to journalists in Maiduguri, said
the insurgents attacked the Doron Baga on Sunday
evening and took away some boys and young men.
It was gathered that 10 were killed by the insurgents.
Some of those that fled the area that were sighted in
Maiduguri on Thursday, said they had to flee the area
because of the constant attacks by the insurgents.
One of the displaced persons, Halima Alhaji Adamu,
said six members of Hadejia community in Doron Baga
were killed and about 100 young men were abducted on
Sunday when the members of the Islamic sect, Boko
Haram launched an attack on their community
displacing thousands who are now seeking refuge in
some parts of Borno and Yobe states.
She lamented that she also lost her husband in the
attack.
She claimed that the insurgents are believed to have
abducted the young men in order to forcefully conscript
them.
According to her, several other communities within
Doron Baga and around have also lost many as well as
others who were abducted by the insurgents.
She said, “The attack was on Sunday, in my family they
killed six people, I don’t know about the other families
but the Hadaijawa community which I belong also had
100 of the abducted by the insurgents.”
Speaking on why she and the rest of her family could
not take advantage of the refugee camps established in
Maiduguri, she said “we are going to our family
members in Gashua.”
“I think it is better to go and live with family members
than opting for camps. We lost everything we have
worked for, and I don’t think the camp will be a better
place for us. With family members, we can have the
courage to face life again but the camp will continue to
make us reflect on our predicament because there is no
care as such no focus for one to engage himself or
herself into doing something meaningful,” She added.
